Chennai is getting ready to celebrate Onam with a feast fit for Mahabali. Across the city, banana leaves are filling up with avial, olan, erissery, kalan and payasams, while pookalams and festive experiences add to the cheer. From traditional sadhyas to contemporary celebrations, here are the city’s Onam offerings to bookmark

Celebrate Onam with a traditional Kerala feast served on a banana leaf, featuring Aviyal, Erissery, Olan, Kaalan, Kootu Curry, Sambar, Rasam and Pulissery, followed by Chakka pradhaman and Paalada pradhaman.

INR 1,725 per person for dine-in. On till August 26. At Rasanai, Besant Nagar.

2. Kerala classics

Savour a traditional banana leaf Onam Sadhya curated by guest chef Supriya Vijay, celebrating Kerala’s festive flavours and culinary traditions.

3. Pookalam parade

Celebrate Onam with a traditional Onam Sadhya featuring Kerala classics such as avial, olan, thoran, kalan, erissery, Sarkara varatti and payasams, served on banana leaves. Beyond the feast, the celebration brings festive pookalams, traditional music and a vibrant atmosphere.

August 25 to 30. Lunch at J Hind, August 25 to 27; dinner at Bazaar, August 28 to 30. At Grand Chennai by GRT Hotels, T Nagar.

4. Celebratory delights

Celebrate Onam with a traditional Onasadhya at Southern Spice, featuring Iinjipuli, avial, Mathanga payar erissery, ulli theeyal, Pachakkaya kalan, Kumbalanga olan and Pineapple pulissery, followed by Ada pradhaman and Paruppu payasam.

INR 3,600 plus taxes per person. August 25 and 26, lunch and dinner. At Southern Spice, Taj Coromandel, Nungambakkam.

5. Culinary customs

Celebrate Onam with a selection of festive experiences, including a limited-edition Onam Thali at Café Mercara Express, and an intimate Onam Sadhya at Madras Pavilion. A curated sadhya is also available through gourmet couch for takeaway.
