This collaboration sets new standards in lighting

Principal designer Rahul Mistri of Open Atelier Mumbai collaborates with Belgian brand Delta Light to craft the world’s largest circular track lighting — a 6-meter-wide lighting ring for his upcoming immersive retail project for Vita Moderna in Mumbai, India.

Through a detailed sketching and planning process, a comprehensive lighting scheme emerged, which resulted in the need for a specific aesthetic effect.

Recognising the need for a distinctive lighting solution for Vita Moderna’s new experience centre, Rahul collaborated with Delta Light to meticulously craft the Superloop system. The need for large-diameter rings pushed the boundaries of both design and functionality, establishing a new benchmark for lighting within expansive retail spaces.

Rahul’s vision for Vita Moderna’s latest experience centre was to craft a precisely controlled environment where light becomes a dual protagonist. The key to this lies in customisable illumination. The final design allows for adjustments based on changing exhibits, ensuring every product is presented in its ideal light. The system is envisioned to create dramatic spaces with warm undertones, further enhancing the visitor experience.

The custom-made, bespoke lighting system consists of 14 superloop lighting rings strategically installed at various heights, magnetic wireless rings, and unique suspensions, which allow effortless adjustments according to the ephemeral placement of furniture and products. The lighting design elevates the experience to a multi-sensory level, captivating the intrinsic qualities of each curated piece.

“We wanted light to act as a tool for defining spaces, allowing us to control the scale of the space. The idea was to create an experience centre that oozes luxury and comfort and does not overwhelm the visitor. So we worked closely with Delta Lights to create a lighting solution that not only accentuates the textures and colours of every piece through its hyper focused approach but also allows for flexibility as the space and exhibits evolve,” shares Rahul, as he reflects on his design intent.

Exhibiting a unique combination of spot, diffused, and aperture lighting, the superloops are mindfully crafted to create an ambience that highlights products while simultaneously setting a dramatic scene.
