It is not often that one comes across a play by 20-something-year-olds that is a political satire. At least not in a city that loves the comic relief that comedies offer. But the maiden production by this three-week-old troupe from the city, Dot Theatre, has decided to challenge status quo with their rendition of Indira Parthasarathy’s Man, Woman and Dog. The 45-minute play, which the troupe has titled Men and Dog, draws extensively from the Indian playwright’s one-act play on how doctrines and philosophies can influence an unquestioning public, we learn. “We have taken creative liberties with the script and contemporised it to suit current settings,” shares director Mohammed Lehry.
Young lust
Performed with a three-member cast, the play has a minimal setting (both in terms of props and colour), so as to keep the focus on the script rather than the performers. “The play is aimed to take the audience through a series of thought-provoking questions and tries to make them ask those questions for themselves,” shares Amrith Jayan, co-founder and member of the cast.
Having performed the production previously twice in Bengaluru, where the duo are students of Theatre Arts, Men and Dog will mark the troupe's entry into Coimbatore’s artistic circles.
