Saaksha & Kinni’s Nomado is Boho and urban at the same time

The Saaksha & Kinni woman is a non-conformist, a risk-taker and a trendsetter, says Saaksha Parekh, one half of the designer duo behind the label. Barely a year old, the duo’s list of clients includes the likes of Kalki Koechlin, Aditi Rao Hydari, Chitrangada Singh and Soha Ali Khan. It might have helped that Saaksha’s uncle happens to be celebrated director Mani Ratnam, but in fashion, it’s hard to be successful if there is no talent to speak of. And the two women seem to be well on their way to success, if they’re not already there.

“Growing up in family of film stars and noted directors, I learnt a lot about costumes and design,” reveals Saaksha, who has an educational background in law. Kinnari Kamat, her business partner and sister-in-law, on the other hand, has over 10 years of experience creating embroidery swatches for design houses such as Elie Saab, Armani, Balmain and Gucci. “So, naturally, embroidery is something that we are very good at,” says Saaksha.

With the flow
Their Spring Summer collection, Nomado, which was launched at Collage Shop India last week, is the embodiment of everything the brand stands for — Bohemian prints, flowy silhouettes, offbeat colours and edgy detailing.
“Nomado takes inspiration from the idea of a gypsy, who is not confined to one place or tied down to anything or anyone,” she tells us. Made entirely from mulmul, the line includes maxi dresses, capes, jumpsuits and anarkalis in an autumnal colour palette of deep browns, burnt orange, black and beige — an interesting choice for a Spring-Summer line. “When we think of summer, we don’t think about bright pastels. We wanted to be more edgy and striking and so, went with earthy tones,” she explains.

Each piece has been embellished with oxidised stones, acid-washed sequins and badla work. “The dull stones and sequins give the garments an antique vibe, which is just what we wanted,” she says. Their anarkali with a detachable bib, which is heavily embellished, makes for ideal occasion wear and their jumpsuits, when paired with their capes, work great for summer evenings. But our favourite is a sand-coloured pleated dress featuring burnt orange, teal and sage green floral prints.
