What it means to be in Childish Gambino’s America

We’ve decoded what Donald Glover’s This is America means

Rebecca Vargese

Donald Glover, who performs under the musical stage name Childish Gambino, released a music video for his new song, This is America over the weekend. And we're playing things down when we say that the song broke the internet.

Directed by Hiro Murai, the four-minute song is brimming with images of gun violence and racial oppression and uses cultural allusions and symbolism brilliantly.

While the internet tried to round up all the hidden messages from the multi-layered videos, here's what we caught from the almost chaotic choreography.

1. The Jim Crow stance

2. The white horse and the police car that none of noticed because of the dancing

3. America’s gun violence

4. The Charleston Massacre of 2015

5. Suicide

6. What it’s like to be black in America
