Hirokazu Kore-Eda's Japanese movie Shoplifter won the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival 2018. The touching movie is about an impoverished family trying to make two ends meet. The movie was also selected to be screened at the event.
Spike Lee's BlacKkKlansman came a close second. The film revolves around racism against the African-American community and the Klu Klux Klan. Director Spike Lee last won an award at Cannes in 1991 for Jungle Fever.
A few other prestigious award winners at Cannes 2018 are Nadine Labaki's Capernaum for Jury prize. The Special Palme d’Or award was bagged by Jean-Luc Godard for Image Book.
