Performance art is a way to enhance and discipline your personality. So believes veteran danseuse Arunima Gupta, who co-helms The Floor, the four-year-old dance studio in Kadavanthra. This is why the school’s two-day event Dance A’fair 2017 (on May 13-14)brings together professional artistes and students to showcase the outcome of their month-long summer workshops. 
“Kochi is not as fast-paced as other Indian cities and hence was the perfect ground for amateurs to undergo rigorous training with the artistes,” says Govind Krishna, who is Arunima’s studio partner. 

Awaiting a spectacle
The first day of the affair unfolds through performances like Rasa and Naritva. “Doyens of contemporary dancing like Dil Sagar ties up with The Floor’s performing company, Aangik, to reinterpret navarasas through elements inspired from kalaripayattu, East Indian Chhau dance, and Brazilian capoeira,” says Arunima, who has spent a staggering 24 years acquainting herself with experimental styles. 
Roping in the trainees of contemporary dance course, Naritva dwells upon the experiences of womanhood through movements coordinated by Satyajit Ravindranath, an alumnus of the renowned London Contemporary Dance School. Tiny tots also get their space through children’s ballet Unfurling—which presents author Hans Andersen’s The Ugly  Duckling—choreographed by New York-trained Shreenath Muthyala. While contemporary dances grab the spotlight, the fete balances it out with hip-hop and Latin performances by popular dancers. The masterclass sessions on the second day also sports exotic experiences like belly dance with Kochi-based Jyothi Vijaykumar and Aqua Zumba with Shweta Pratap Singh who is flying down from Pune.
