Our tenth award winner to be featured in the Devi Awards countdown series is Reeta Devi
A mason in the Kamhariya village of Chandauli, UP, Reeta Devi is breaking gender stereotypes in her highly patriarchal society. A single mother of five, Reeta Devi entered the profession cautiously as it is a field dominated by men. Overcoming the ridicule of her fellow villagers, Reeta Devi with the support of Shramik Bharti and HDFC Bank Parivartan, not only became a mason but a skilled one at that. Having been trained to build toilets and hand pump platforms, Reeta put her skills to use in her native village, thereby making a livelihood. Her work has been a source of inspiration to other women as they also educate themselves with skills that the usual gender norms wouldn't allow them.
Reeta Devi is our Devi for breaking gender stereotypes and excelling in her profession as a mason.
