The purpose of early art, like cave paintings, was to convey a message. Pachamama art community—which involves a collective of millennial artists—questions whether art has gone far from this initial intention through a showcase titled Llave.
Abandoning the concept of using paper or canvas as a medium, the exhibition features quotes, poems and drawings on walls, along with installations.
“We named our event in Spanish and the word means ‘key’. A lot of our own lives took a turn because of inspiration that stuck after encountering parables or poems. We hope to do the same for people who visit our hall,” says Lakshmi P M, a medicine student turned artist, about conceptualising the event.
The writings range from the poetry of Persian figure Rumi to William Shakespeare and wisdom of Swami Vivekananda to that of philosopher J Krishnamurthy.

art cafe itself has been a starting point of inspiration for the artists. “The mission of this venue is to be as close to nature as possible. So, we’ve stuck to using earth materials like charcoal to finish the drawings,” says the youngster, who is currently pursuing her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree at the Sree Sankaracharya University of Sanskrit, Kalady.
One can also spot shapes like platonic solids—which are found naturally in objects like beehives—among the various creatives. The exhibits like one of a water wheel (denoting how life begins to turn) and another using black and white threads (based on yin-yang concept of interconnectedness) have been designed to aid the wordings.
The artists hope that visitors will garner a word or a quote from among the collection— scattered across the display space in a jumbled manner—which will help them choose their path.
