Yuletide cheer in Chennai: Christmas parties, larger than life trees and ornaments on the beach

A quick rewind of what Chennai got up to this past week

Two weeks to Christmas and the city is buzzing with yuletide cheer. It was all about lighting up those big beautiful Christmas trees this week, with several events happening at different locations around the city. Some found themselves at Hyatt Regency Chennai while others went to Novotel. My yellow brick road, or in this case, tinsel lined one, took me to Phoenix Market City and Palladium on Saturday, for the lighting of the largest experiential Christmas tree in Chennai. Not only was it an impressive sight, but the crowd got to walk through it, marvelling at all of the specially curated baubles for the occasion. To sweeten the deal, Ferragamo also invited us to check out their latest collection that evening, so it was a ‘kill two birds with one stone’ situation, where we picked out our favourites, and took lots of photos all around. On Sunday, the festive spirit continued but in a more relaxed setting at Surf Turf Covelong, where Divya Pandurangam taught us how to make macramé ornaments, in the best setting ever. We enjoyed the process, following along (some quickly, others not so much), with some good-natured banter to boot.

We checked the fashion box this week with an exclusive preview of the House of Masaba’s latest collection at their store on KNK Road. Hosted by the Funky Fish duo, Pavitra Sagar and Nikita Bajaj, the event debuted statement pieces from the collection, marking the collaboration between designer-stylist duo Masaba Gupta and Rhea Kapoor.

Closing out the week was the National Day of the Kingdom of Thailand at the Taj Connemara, in the presence of the Consul General Nitirooge Phoneprasert. The evening saw the diplomatic brigade in full attendance. Guests got to savour an authentic Thai spread, and they especially loved the longan fruit. With everyone in their national attire, lots of pictures were taken too.
