My first column of 2019… of course the first thing we have to do is a New Year’s Eve round-up, before we can talk about the year ahead. So what were the good citizens of Chennai up to for NYE 2018? As always, there was the in town-out of town divide, with me falling into the latter category. While many were off to exotic locales, our destination of choice was humble Coonoor, with a fun group. So think rolling hills, crackling fireplaces, good food and yes lots of selfies. A stunning backdrop like that isn’t just hard to resist, but makes all the usual stuff seem inconsequential. We spent most of our time soaking it all in, but did manage to get out of ‘slow-mo’ mode and put our best foot forward to bring in the New Year at Coonoor Club.
Meanwhile, back in Chennai, we saw the entire party spectrum. From house parties, to five-star bashes, to all-out glam shindigs, to some who decided to just stay home and get a good night’s sleep. Not the worst idea. And flooding social media with some serious glam was a fashion show by Karun Raman at Le Royal Meridien, themed ‘One night in Paris’. Models walked the ramp in slinky resort wear by Suresh Menon, ending with gowns, generously sequined. Who doesn’t love a little bling, especially on New Year’s Eve?
While on social media it’s been all about ‘Living your best life’ and ‘Being your best self’, we’re certainly looking forward to a more productive and positive 2019. ‘Party harder’ will be replaced by ‘party wiser’, and hopefully, more meaningful friendships. On a less abstract note, Chennai is also seeing a burst of millennial entrepreneurs, many of whom will be launching new projects in the next few months. Whether it’s products or venues, it’s great to be able to have more choice. So here’s to new beginnings, change for the better and exciting adventures in 2019! Many cheers!
