Is the earth alive? This is a question that poets, philosophers, scientists and sociologists have been trying to find the answer to since time immemorial. In the early 1970s, chemist James E. Lovelock and biologist Lynn Margulis came up with the The Gaia Hypothesis. It theorised that the earth is a living organism that regulates and maintains all the natural processes — an entity that is greater than the sum of all of its living and nonliving aspects. If this has caught your intrigue, you must check out a visual representation of the quest in the art exhibition Organic Reverie, which has debuted in town recently at Gallery Time & Space.
“Each work in this collection serves as a window into the organic world, capturing not just the picturesque aspect of nature but also the spiritual energy that animates every living being withinthe environment,” Renu George, Director of Gallery Time & Space, tells us. She further notes, “There is an element of human intervention but only at the simplest level, highlighting the essential supremacy of nature. The artworks have not been commissioned for the show but have been chosen from the work done spontaneously by the artists; so each work demonstrates unique skill, emotion and authenticity.”
A total of 25 artists have prepared these artworks, some of whom include Amitabh Sengupta, Bharti Sagar, GS Bhavani, Shirley Mathew, Sukeshan Kanka and more. Such a diverse ensemble of artists lend to a plethora of mediums such as watercolours, tempera on treated cloth, photography, paperworks, mixed media on paper and canvas, paperworks, cyanotype prints on paper and acrylic and oil on canvas. A blend of tradition, post-modern and modern techniques is seen, with the styles often being abstract, pointillist, real, surreal and much more.
“Though green dominates the exhibition, other colours of nature also make their presence felt. Silhouettes in black, backgrounds in red or skies in white! No colour is eschewed in the display, each denoting their role in the environ- ment,” Renu tells us.
Senior artist Amitabh Sengupta’s Forest series, Bharti Sagar’s artwork Twilight Haze, multi-disciplinary artist GS Bhavani’s work Forest 2 and Sukesan Kanka’s Land of Emotion include some of the works you must not miss out on.
Entry free. Till June 9, 10.30 am onwards. At Gallery Time & Space, Lavelle Road.
