GoMAD: When Chai Met Toast on the music that makes them smile

1. Joy of Little Things released last year and you have been on multiple tours since what has the response to the album been?

The response has been really great. We were basically providing a downloadable three song EP, where two of the songs were already quite popular on Youtube. Though, the songs had more elements going in on the EP. 

2. When Chai Met Toast was popular even before the EP came out. Your performances on Music Mojo and the single Fireflies gained you quite a bit of popularity. Did that in any way affect the outcome of the EP?

Nope, in fact the response was better because the songs and the band was already popular. And we consciously made effort to improve the production of the song as well. So the EP was basically a tribute to our hardcore fan base. 

3. Kerala boys, who sing in Hindi and English and the occasional Tamil line. What about using the native tongue in your songs?

Unfortunately, writing in Malayalam doesn't come very easily for any of us. We aren't against the idea, though. In fact, Ashwin (vocals) has sung for quite a few Malayalam movies. 

4. What's the indie music scene in the country like? 

It's going through one of the best transitions now, where more and more brands are interested in the content being brought out and the listener base is increasing by day because of the digital media. It has now actually become possible for musicians to make a living solely out of their passion. 

5. You define yourselves as creators of happy music. What inspires your lyrics?

Everyday observations of life. The fact that life as is, always has to move forward irrespective of hardships, obstacles, etc amazes us and forms the core of our lyrics. 

6. All of you have a varied musical background - classical, metal. How has that influenced your sound? 

That's probably the best part, our music making does not abide by strict directions or sound. We make music instinctively, which will become more evident with our coming releases. The freedom to do that probably comes from our varied musical backgrounds.

8. What does 2018 hold in store for your fans?

A lot more of content and music. We will also probably add few more elements to our live performance. 

9.You've said that you wanted to make music that makes people happy. What's some music that makes you smile?

Different for each one of us, to be honest. Music that makes all of us smile unanimously would probably be any breakthrough song/music coming out of an Indian Independent artist.
