What it means to be in Childish Gambino’s America
We’ve decoded what Donald Glover’s This is America means
Donald Glover, who performs under the musical stage name Childish Gambino, released a music video for his new song, This is America over the weekend. And we're playing things down when we say that the song broke the internet.
Directed by Hiro Murai, the four-minute song is brimming with images of gun violence and racial oppression and uses cultural allusions and symbolism brilliantly.
Childish Gambino’s dance moves distracted all of us from the craziness that was happening in the background of the video & that's exactly the point he's trying to make.......#ThisIsAmerica pic.twitter.com/7o9e0XBGld— Hurt Cobain (@D_Breezy_) May 6, 2018
While the internet tried to round up all the hidden messages from the multi-layered videos, here's what we caught from the almost chaotic choreography.
1. The Jim Crow stance
2. The white horse and the police car that none of noticed because of the dancing
Death riding the Pale white horse while he is followed by Hell (represented by police) going totally unnoticed because of dancing and pop culture in the foreground is the single greatest cinematic message I’ve seen in a music video to date. #ThisIsAmerica pic.twitter.com/DYaPjbvoym— Isaiah Persons (@PersonsIsaiah) May 6, 2018
3. America’s gun violence
4. The Charleston Massacre of 2015
6. What it’s like to be black in America
