Kamal Haasan formally began his political journey on Wednesday. He names the party Makkal Needhi Maiam which traslates to People's Justice Forum.

Hours before the actor-turned-politician launched his party, the actor had visited the residence of former president APJ Abdul Kalam in Rameswaram and interacted with his family members..

"By entering politics, my responsibilities have increased. Anyone from any profession can enter politics. Everyone with intent and passion can come into politics," Kamal said.

The actor made short speeches en route to Madurai, where he announced the name of his party and its policies. He said, “I am no more a movie star. From now on, I will be a lamp at your home.” Chief Minister of Delhi, Arvind Kejriwal was present in Madurai for the event.

After adressing a group of fishermen at a village near Mandapam, Kamal went to Abdul Kalam memorial in Rameswaram. "Kalam resided in a simple house, but his national spirit was something to learn," Kamal said. "There was no politics in my plan to visit Kalam's school. Kalam is an inspirational figure for me," he added.

"I have not come here to ask the fishermen to join my party, but I have come to join them. Fishing is one of the important professions and all that is needed should be done to sustain it. Fishermen too should understand the need to respect international laws. I hope you people understand what I am saying," Kamal said refering to the firing on fishermen by Sri Lankan navy.
