In January 2017, the Duchess of Sussex Meghan Markle visited an NGO in Mumbai that works on empowering women in slum areas and spreads awareness around menstrual hygiene by distributing locally-manufactured sanitary napkins.
When the Suits star married Prince Harry, the couple requested their guests to consider donating to charities across the globe, which included this Mumbai NGO.
Bollywood actress Taapsee Pannu recently collaborated with the organisation. Talking about it to a leading media organisation, the Pink star reportedly said, “Even in a regular middle-class household in Mumbai and Delhi, periods are discussed using furtive gestures and awkward eye contact. Having periods is common to Meghan Markle, me and every other woman in the world. With great power comes great responsibility, and if people like her contribute and support this kind of initiative, it widens its reach, as she is in a power position.”
She emphasised on creating awareness of menstrual hygiene through cinema and art, to help women across the country.
