Portuguese footballer Cristiano Ronaldo married his longtime partner Georgina Rodríguez on August 11, 2026, in a private, intimate ceremony at their home in Cascais, Portugal. However, their asset division post marriage has thrown matrimonial property laws in Goa under focus.

Goa continues to maintain aspects of the 1867 Portuguese Civil Code for married couples

Cristiano Ronaldo and his new wife Georgina Rodríguez reportedly signed a "separation of property" agreement ahead of their marriage. Under the Portuguese Civil Law, this ensures that the ownership of the individual assets of the couple, remains exclusively with them instead of an automatic 50-50 ownership.

A similar civil law exists for married couples in India's Goa, a former Portuguese colony. The Portuguese Civil Code, 1867 ensures separate matrimonial property regimes as well as separation of assets which means, individually, the couple can own the properties under their name instead of joint ownership.

This Code is usually included in a prenuptial agreement which allows individuals to exclusively own their individual properties in the event of divorce as well. This civil law continues to bind Goa and Portugal, decades after the Europeans left the country.

Goa is the only state in India that follows the Uniform Civil Code in terms of "marriage, divorce, succession, and property to all its residents regardless of religion".

However, it must be noted, despite the preservation of the Portuguese-era matrimonial civil law, India does not have provision of prenuptial agreements at par with European property agreements. While a prenup may be signed before marriage it is not automatically or absolutely binding under the Indian law. Goa is the only example where a prenups are still recognised, thanks to the existing Portuguese Civil Code, but, they are not given more importance over statutory rights.
