A four-part crime documentary series on the 2008 Aarushi Talwar murder case will premiere on the small screen this weekend. The Talwars – Behind Closed Doors is a pioneering venture into investigative crime documentaries, based on the 2008 case that created ripples in Indian society, over the heinous crime, and the twists and turns of the legal proceedings that followed.
As the facts have it, the victim, Aarushi’s dentist parents – Rajesh and Nupur Talwar – were blamed for killing their own daughter and domestic help Hemraj. The dentist couple was then acquitted by the Allahabad High Court, and they walked free from Dasna prison in Ghaziabad. The four-part series unfolds the details of the case. The focus is on the destruction that one night of violence in May 2008 wreaked in the Talwar household. “The series echoes the sentiment of the country on whether the pieces of the puzzle will ever fall in,” offers a statement for the show.
“A little over nine years, various films and books, countless conspiracy theories and lakhs of news articles later, the Talwars were acquitted on 12 October 2017. In an emotional conversation, the couple share their thoughts about their time in jail, losing their only child, and what life ahead may look like now, on the other side,” says the statement. The series has been produced in association with HBO Asia and created by the team that comprises acclaimed journalist and BAFTA-winning filmmaker Sarah MacDonald as executive producer, and film editor Miikka Leskinen, who has nearly a hundred awards including a Primetime Emmy along with an Oscar and BAFTA nominations.
Airs on Star World & Hotstar from November 26.
