The trailer of the live-action adaptation of DC’s Teen Titans that was unveiled at the San Diego Comic-Con is a much darker and more adult take on its younger heroes. Featuring the usual suspects from the comics, the trailer begins with Raven (Teagan Croft) talking to Dick Grayson/Nightwing (Brenton Thwaites) about his past in the circus. In a dream-like sequence, the trailer reveals a shot of young Dick Grayson’s tragic story - a snapping rope that ends with his parents falling to their death.

Struggling with his mantle as Robin, the trailer features a distraught Dick Grayson looking at his old uniform and throwing his Robin emblem against the wall. And if you thought that Robin’s identity crisis was temporary, you’d be sorely mistaken. After all, one would never expect to hear Grayson who is part of the DC’s Dynamic Duo - Batman and Robin, ever answering the question: ‘Where's Batman?’ with “F**ck Batman”

“If you look at when Robin first left Batman in the comics, there was a lot of uneasiness. Titans is really a series about these different characters that are all lost in their lives; just like the greatest comic book Titans run ever, by Marv Wolfman and George Pérez, it’s about all these lost characters find one another. And they’re all struggling with something, and Robin is clearly struggling with his past with Batman,” said Geoff Johns, DC's former president who is now a writer and executive producer on Titans.

While we do get glimpses of Starfire (Anna Diop), Beast Boy (Ryan Potter) and Dove (Minka Kelly), the trailers reveal that season One will centre around Raven who is trying to manage the darkness within her.

Titans, which doesn't yet have a release date, will be available exclusively on the DC Universe streaming platform.
