Renowned designer Abhishek Dutta, known for his signature grunge and quirky looks and out-of-the-box experiments with leather, is ready with his new winter wear collection for men, Regal Dark. Keeping in line with his love for all things punk, the new line of clothing has a brilliant use of colours dark, with splashes of bright hues.

“There is a lot of fusion when it comes to menswear for the cold season. This year, I have kept the collection limited to grooms wear and party wear, since winter diaries are mostly chock-a-block with weddings, parties and festivities. Apart from  a royal touch and engaging colours, I have played with a lot of new interesting styles and cuts in my creations,” informs Dutta.

Dutta has come up with an interesting array of Indo-western fusion jackets. There are western jackets with bandhgalas, crepe kurtas with Nehru jackets, tuxedos and blazers and even long French coats with embroidered appliqué work in different fabrics. “I have used a lot of animal motifs, especially birds, since they are trending this year a lot. Also, a lot of geometric patterns have been employed,” offers the 40-year-old designer from Kolkata.

Dutta, who has been in the fashion industry for 15 years now, is known for his play with dark colours to accentuate the eccentric look.  This time, too, the colour palette is more on the darker side, with heavy use of Indi-blue, shades of charcoals and greys and hints of blood red.

Most of his creations for the winter collection boast of asymmetric openings and hem lines. Even the collars, the quirkily designed patterns and embroideries have a touch of asymmetry in them. “I have kept a lot of interesting openings. Instead of buttons, a lot of tie-ups have been used, such as, buckles and belts, which lend a very unconventional yet sophisticated look. And since it’s a season of weddings, all the clothes have a touch of royalty in them,” avers Dutta.

The collection has clothes that one can wear both to weddings and parties, with a little mix and match. There is a lot of detailing, whether in buttons, embroideries or collars. Metal buttons etched with royal emblems and motifs and geometric patterns are quirky and unique.

Dutta, has also come up with a wide range of designer shoes to go with your sartorial choices. Made of embossed and textured leather, the collection has pointed tie-ups, loafers, moccasins and boots in different hues of uncommon colours, such as shades of purples, mustard yellow and royal blue. “Contrast shoes are big time in fashion right now, so pair them cleverly with your clothes,” advises Dutta.

The collection will be available at his men's boutique, Abhishek Dutta Menswear in Short Street. Price on request.
