Masaba Gupta has a spanking new flagship store in the city, a stunning Game of Thrones collection, and all our attention

The Masaba aesthetic has gone through a phenomenal trajectory in the last decade. A glance at the designer’s lookbook tells you enough about the homegrown cultural diversity that her work has come to represent so flawlessly. From hijab saris to tribal-inspired capes, Masaba Gupta’s brand is almost synonymous with whatever is unexplored. Sartorially, at least.

And, when you step into the chic new Kolkata flagship of the designer, which just opened shop on Woodburn Road a few days ago, the multiplicity of heritage and cultures warms you up instantly. The fiery pop colours and neon hints are innately pleasurable to witness against the shocking white walls, and the imaginatively lit space. The designer recently unveiled her Game of Thrones collection, as a part of her official line of GoT merchandise (apparel and jewellery), leaving her indelible mark in the narrative of pop culture’s most important milestone.

“While the line is our rendition of Winterfell, we pay homage to Arya Stark through a fusion of feminine v/s masculine silhouettes that show the glimpses of our design sensibilities. While I am a fan of the show, I’m not nearly as huge a fan as my mother (Neena Gupta)!” Masaba tells us. The Masaba X Game of Thrones line-up features numbers like the Bleeding Tree Lungi, Gold Stark Sigil Printed Maxi Dress and Red Sigil Storm Hoodie Tunic, which are adventurously draped and completely in sync with the tenor of the show. The jewellery numbers from the collection too have phenomenal old-world detailing; consider the beaten silver neckpieces, oversized golden dragon earrings and metallic shoulder dusters. The Tale of Seven Kingdoms choker in gold is our personal favourite; a breezy choker with mini sword charms, it features the sigils of the existing kingdoms of the realm. Masaba’s newest flagship is replete with the designer’s sense of relaxed, rehashed desi-ness.

So, you can expect monochrome animal prints on vintage white-panelled doors, an old-time black and gold telephone at the desk, and a signature Masaba camera-printed sack full of desi candies. This is incidentally not Masaba’s first Kolkata flagship, but this is certainly her best. Masaba tells us that quite a bit of homework went into the making of this new outlet.

“I think, we didn’t do the right things during our first time in Kolkata (her first outlet was at Quest Mall). While the location was perfect, we could have had a better turnaround in merchandise and, since I was running the show solo, I did not have enough time to focus on Kolkata. So, it led to a lot of learnings, and this time, we took all the right decisions and gave the store all the attention it needed. We also tied up with local partners who are very invested and focused on this venture,” the designer explains. We also got a glimpse of Masaba’s latest Resort lineup, and Spring/Summer festive collection; the latter consists of some of her most interesting numbers, including pop-coloured dhoti saris, monotone Banarasis, garden capes, sequined gown saris, and so on.

“With colours like blacks, whites, silvers and tone-on-tone prints, the line explores the flamboyance of the art deco & art nouveau movements. The collection also incorporates conventional shades of reds, golds and signature pink to strike a balance between old-world charm and modern day aesthetics and sensibilities. We also shot it in a barber shop, to show the pain and hassle that goes behind the perfect wedding day!” Masaba tells us.

If you follow House of Masaba on Instagram (we know you do), you couldn’t have possibly missed out on the aesthetically shot campaign for the collection. Masaba has been the go-to originator for the Instagram generation, and millennials and Gen-Z have been tremendously invested in her modern vision. “I think the millennials and GenZ’ers belong to a very trend-conscious and always-on-the-go generation. They are looking for fuss-free and breezy silhouettes in bright and fresh colours. They’re looking for something unpredictable and eclectic, clothes that make them stand out with ease!” offers the designer. Store at Woodburn Park Road, Elgin Road.
