Imagine a bag that looks minimalist and classy, that can be carried to work – but over the weekend it transforms into a perfect carry-all for an overnight trip. Wouldn’t that solve a lot of your travel woes? Two 28-year-olds from Bengaluru, Devraj Bhadra and Karan Patel, who helm a firm called Meshined Design Consultancy, knew that necessity is the mother of invention. Hence, they have come up with a range of unique bags, called Smthn Snug, that not only adds to your look when you suit-up for work and but is equally useful for an overnight trip, say a corporate retreat straight from work. The bag can be transformed according to needs, and can hold a 15-inch laptop, office essentials, clothing for a trip and toiletries as well.
Five in one
Both the designers felt there was a dearth for multipurpose bags in the market. “We are the designers so we believe that the onus is on us to make products that make people’s lives easier,” says Patel. One often faces difficulty as the briefcase or laptop bag is not big enough when you need to add that something more. Also, if travelling light is on the agenda, then carrying a sling bag and a briefcase and laptop bags is too cumbersome. “I often travel a lot on short trips. So we felt, as consumers we were compromising hence decided to design these bags from scratch,” says Bhadra, explaining that he and Patel started on the design board imagining a sheet and how it can be made into a bag with high-utility. They also kept in mind that the return journeys, in terms of luggage, would vary from one’s onward journey. So, there’s enough space in the bag to fit everything they want to while returning.
Liberating design
The bags from the brand are divided into two categories – Simply Snug and Really Snug. While the former has the basic features of the product, the latter that goes by the name Really Snug is an advanced version that offers more features and compartments. The unisex bags come in a colour scheme of grey and black nylon with hints of leather and denim. Bhadra and Patel, from National Institute of Design, Ahmedabad and Shrishti School of Design, Bengaluru respectively wanted to create bags that are not only free of design restrictions but aren’t ruled by gender-based stereotypes as well. “We wanted to create a bag that’s unisex. And it’s working. Looks like more women are choosing the black nylon one and more men are choosing denim. Who says only women like colour?” quips Bhadra. Financed by a crowdfunding initiative, the brand will be ready to roll out their first batch of bags in three weeks time. You can pre-order by logging on to the campaign link.
