The Zara stores, to most fashion junkies, are like a candy shop - the chicest, coolest and latest European runway trends, at a fraction of the cost of all those luxury brands. Who wouldn’t want that? But everything comes at a price and here, the price is the environment. However... here’s some good news. Zara is all set to go completely sustainable by 2025. The fast fashion brand joins the likes of H&M and Uniqlo (both of whom have adopted their own sustainable practices in the recent past.)
The move also extends to the other brands that come under Inditex (the parent company) - Pull & Bear and Bershka. By the year 2025, all three brands will use organic, sustainable or recycled cotton, linen and polyester. In addition, the existing Zara store will start collecting old clothes that they can reuse and recycle for other purposes. They have also pledged to be free of single-use plastic by the year 2023.
"We need to be a force for change, not only in the company but in the whole sector," Inditex chairman and CEO, Pablo Isla, said in their annual meeting last week, during which the move was announced. "Sustainability is a never-ending task in which everyone here at Inditex is involved and in which we are successfully engaging all of our suppliers," he added.
