‘You can quit smoking for life with the help of electro-acupuncture’: Chinese medicine practitioner Dr Rui Pedro
Besides offering a wide range of spa, fitness and yoga sessions and therapies, Atmantan, a wellness resort in Mulshi (Pune), also hosts wellness practitioners and yoga experts. During our visit earlier this month, we met Chinese Medicine practitioner Dr Rui Pedro who specialises in alternative healing therapies like acupuncture and epigenetics.
Talking about the importance of Chinese medicine, Dr Pedro stressed on the fact that it is holistic in nature. “I don’t treat symptoms or diseases, I treat people who have a problem. And, I treat the roots of the problem,” says Dr Pedro, a resident of Portugal who studied Chinese medicine after being fascinated by their approach. One of the services from his offerings that particularly intrigued us was ‘Quit Smoking For Life’.
During our interaction with the doctor, he explained how smoking was a big concern for him since the existing therapies weren’t giving sufficient results. “Most of the times, the way Chinese medicine was approaching this problem was by lowering the anxiety. So, I started researching what can be done with acupuncture and how can I reach the part of the brain responsible for it. Eventually, I narrowed down on a combination of points but the next challenge was how to remove the nicotine receptor from here with a non-invasion technique,” says Dr Pedro who eventually developed an electro-acupuncture method and says that so far he has helped about 550 people in quitting smoking. “People find it very easy to quit smoking with this technique. They don’t feel withdrawal symptoms and they are calmer,” he adds.
Another very interesting offering was the epigenetic test with which he checks your levels of nutrients, vitamins, minerals, essential amino acids, fatty acids, antioxidants, and contaminants, using a few strands of hair.
