Nearly two decades later, the sequel to a film that was once uncertain of its success is finally set for a theatrical release. As anticipation builds for the high-octane fashion drama The Devil Wears Prada 2, actor Meryl Streep has reflected on how audiences have evolved over the years.

We had to scrabble for our budget: Meryl Streep recalls Devil Wears Prada days

The Devil Wears Prada released in 2006 focused on a woman dominated storyline which was an unpopular take on films during that time. The film following its release was called by several names and one of the labels was ‘chick flick’ meaning, it’s meant for only young women.

It was barely given any budget because people thought it would be a not-so-hit film. However with time as society evolved, the film not only became amongst the favourites but a classic that generations of audience go back to even today.

While talking about the same on a talk show, the lead actor Meryl Streep renowned as the stern Miranda Priestly pointed out how the industry has changed over the years.

She said, “I mean, 20 years ago it was categorised as a ‘chick flick’, and that designation has kind of not worn well, you know? That designation has kind of not worn well after Barbie and Mamma Mia and other films that completely catch the studios by surprise that people want to see them because they have women in the center of the story.” She added, “So we had to scrabble for our budget.”

She also mentioned that it was the same for the film Barbie and talking to the director Greta Gerwig she said, “that was true with Barbie a little bit, in comparison to what they spend on other films.” However she mentions this upcoming sequel of The Devil Wears Prada has received the considerable budget required. She added, “This one, honey, they spent the money.”

The Devil Wears Prada 2 directed by David Frankel is set to release on May 1 in the theatres and it is bringing back most of the original casts. The stellar members include Anne Hathaway, Meryl Streep, Emily Blunt, and Stanley Tucci.
