The project arrives five years after the mixed reception and modest box-office performance of Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City. While Cregger’s film is reportedly moving away from a direct game adaptation in favor of an original story set within the established universe, he remains cautious about deviating too far from the source material.
Recently, Cregger shared his perspective as a fan, noting that his gut reaction to game adaptations is often a plea to "not ruin" the property. This underscores a shifting trend in Hollywood: the creators behind these major franchises are now fans themselves, bringing a sense of personal responsibility to the weight of the Resident Evil legacy.
When discussing his new Resident Evil movie, he said: “I love the idea of being pitted against a world that is hellbent on annihilating you. It just feels fun and I haven’t seen a movie that offers that sort of experience.” He added that he expects horror fans will “crucify” him if the new film changes the source material in any way.
While the film's plot remains largely secret, a 2025 leak indicated that Euphoria and Weapons star Austin Abrams will lead the cast as a medical courier thrust into a desperate fight for survival against the T-virus. It is still unclear exactly where this story fits into the series' timeline, especially since Cregger has hinted that the film will not strictly follow the established lore.
