Imagine watching a cricket match where the Himalayas rise like mighty giants, surrounding the stadium. That’s exactly what is set to unfold in the valley of Leh. The stunning mountain city near Thiksey, is planning to set up the World’s highest cricket stadium at 11,800ft. While discussions are underway, official confirmation is yet to be made public. The proposed stadium could give a major boost to Ladakh’s tourism and result in major developments.
The proposed cricket stadium, if gets done, will hail the title of being the world’s highest cricket stadium and it would help attract more tourists and international presence in India. With an estimated cost of INR 100 crore, the stadium could open new doors for local young athletes, offering them better sporting facilities while drawing cricket lovers and curious travellers to the breathtaking landscapes of Ladakh. As per reports, the proposed stadium will accommodate around 40,000 spectators.
As ambitious as this project sounds, it is going to be challenging for the players. Now taking up such concerns, comments flooded the internet. One user in a viral post wrote, “Please care about players the oxygen levels at 11000 ft is very low temperature is 10 to 15 degree Celsius in summers players can't play there in such a extreme conditions”.
Another added, “Ladakh should get Olympics class Ice Hockey, Skiing and other winter sports infrastructure rather than cricket. An indoor stadium will also be a great asset for nurturing local talent”. A third user wrote, “I can say now after seeing this news that this beautiful place might lose its beauty, because in our country if you observe the data, in the name of development we only have exploitation, damage, superficially managing the work, just to provide proof in the name of promise.”
The breathtaking mountains of Ladakh are known to quite literally take your breath away, with their soaring altitudes and thin, crisp air. So, running around and doing all the athletic movements, would come as a challenge for the players. Lower oxygen levels and changes in how the ball behaves in the high-altitude conditions would demand a whole new level of adaptation from teams taking the field.
The proposed stadium is not India’s first high altitude venue. Because back in 2023, the Spituk Football Stadium in Leh was inaugurated as India's highest-altitude football stadium. It ranks among the top ten highest stadiums in the world. Beyond Ladakh, Dharamshala's HPCA Stadium has long stood as India's most prominent high-altitude cricket venue that hosts IPLs and other matches.
