Tristan Rogers, who played Robert Scorpio on General Hospital passed away at the age of 79; his manager confirmed the news on Friday. The actor’s death comes shortly after he spoke about being diagnosed with lung cancer. He said last month that he had never smoked, but the disease had already advanced. His final appearance on the show aired in July, the same time his illness became public.

Remembering Tristan Rogers, the man behind Robert Scorpio

Tristan first joined General Hospital in 1980. The part was meant to last only a few days. Instead, the character of Scorpio turned into one of the soap’s most popular roles. Tristan stayed until 1992 and came back for several runs over the years, the last one this year. For viewers, Scorpio was a mix of charm and sharp wit. Tristan had admitted that the role changed his life in ways he never expected. He found it hard to go shopping or walk through an airport without people stopping him even at a point in his life.

He acted in many soaps, including The Young and the Restless and The Bold and the Beautiful, nothing meant as much to him as General Hospital. Scorpio gave him the chance to shape a character that felt different from the usual daytime heroes. Fans who followed the show through the 1980s often link those years with him.

Away from television, Rogers lived a quieter life. He was known by friends as loyal and family-minded. He is survived by his wife, Teresa, his daughter Sara Jane, 32, and his son Cale, 29.

For over forty years, he remained part of General Hospital’s story. To many, he will always be remembered in that trench coat, quick with a line, solving another mystery in Port Charles. His passing closes a chapter in daytime TV, but his work left a character that will not fade easily.
