Ice lollies just got way cooler. And here’s why. Chennai is tapping into a flavour boom this summer that has us tracking down these refreshers on a stick with sticky fingers and bedazzled menu scrolls. From a homestyle buttermilk and boondhi to a luxurious Prosecco — our pick of popsicles promise to keep you hydrated and tease your curiosity at the same time. From Vadapalani to Radha Krishna Salai to Elliot’s Beach — stay hydrated wherever you are and refresh your palate with these mood pleasers that work especially well in the absence of air conditioning!

Prosecco pizzazz
The words prosecco and popsicle rarely make their way into the same sentence. So imagine our surprise when discovered that Leather Bar at The Park is serving up a refreshing Italian wine-meets mango creation on a stick for the summer. Frozen about six hours, this mix with a hint of orange liqueur is, in fact, a cocktail masquerading as an ice lolly, and makes it to the top of our candy shop list! Rs 600 inclusive of taxes. For a lick without the kick, sample their Aloe Vera Matcha or Very Berry flavours,
Rs 500.

Charcoal + coconut
Savoury popsicles are a first for Chennai. And The Tickle Truck parked at Elliot’s Beach which is only a couple of weeks old offers familiar flavours like Mystery More (spicy buttermilk with kaara boondhi) and Masala Jamun (with sev and chaat masala) — reimagined for compact enjoyment, minus bulky steel pots and such. Put together by former child artiste Barath Jaiyanth (28) who you may recognise from movies like Vaanthaipola and FRIENDS, along with partners Shanmuga Pandian and Jesvin Prabhu — a colorist and film editor respectively — this project is inspired as you might have guessed from ice cream trucks seen in movies. Among 12 flavours to choose from (fruity, savoury and chocolatey), look out for the charcoal black popsicle topped with desiccated coconut which makes a stark first impression. Delicate and sweet with a coconut milk blend, we’re tempted to lap up more than just one. Rs 30 to Rs 60.

What the fig?
Fresh fruit and dried fruit have individual sections on the Frosticks menu. The kiosk at Forum Vijaya Mall which is a little over a year old in Chennai is an extension of the three-year-old brand in Hyderabad. Expect fresh and seasonal alphonso and sitaphal sorbets on a stick alongside year-round options like dates, pistachios and fig lollies. Drizzled with honey or half-dipped in rich dark chocolate, 34-year-old founder Ali Raza tells us, “We’re one of the few places that garnish with chocolate like Ferrero Rocher and Kit Kat for some crunch.” Add to that, their more sinful chocolate section that covers French vanilla, coffee and Belgian Dark Chocolate — and we’re in a fix about which one to try first! Rs 80 to 120.

Love me tender
Want your coconut water more chilled? Chef Ram Kumar V at Va Pho promises you will be satisfied with the temperature on his Tender coconut popsicle made with a blend of coconut water and fresh pulp. “In addition, there is also a rich rose-flavoured coconut cream that it is plated with, which has a generous helping of sago pearls and freshly chopped water chestnuts for some texture,” says the chef. If you’re nuts about coconuts — we suggest you turn dinner upside down and start with dessert. Rs 179 inclusive of taxes.

Vanilla Sky
The humble chocobar has inspired some colourful variants at Amelie’s — such as a coating of bright yellow lemon, hot pink strawberry or earthy caramel. Rs 135 for three minis or Rs 135 for a single piece (large). For those looking to stick to good ol’ chocolate, Amadora’s line-up does not disappoint. The options include Vanilla Raspberry, Vanilla Dulce de Leche, Chocolate Brownie and Chocolate Caramel — all encased within a decadent blanket of Belgian dark chocolate. Rs 150 inclusive of taxes.
