If the old adage ‘You are what you eat’ rings true, then our generation is in trouble. But, all hope is not lost, as there’s a new cookery workshop in town. The experts at Kerala Ayurveda Academy provides us—exponents of the ‘work hard, party harder’ lifestyle who thrive on preservative-laden fast food—with a fresh perspective on this ancient art of self-healing, via their seven-day course titled Aahara.

“We hope to provide balanced recipes that ground the soul, nourish the body and delight the senses. Unlike other cookery courses we use 5,000-year-old Ayurvedic principles of using seasonal regimens, which varies from mutton to green gram, which balance the functional units of Vata, Pitha and Kapha (TriDosha) to do so,” explains Dr Dhanya C Radhakrishnan, the vice-principal at this 17-year-old institution.

Tracing our roots
Did you know that adding honey into boiling hot tea, renders it mildly poisonous? How about cooking tips like using rock salt instead of sea salt in everyday cooking, as the latter affects eyesight? “Our recipes, especially for naadan fare like avial, are about using easily available ingredients, that assure maximum nutrient absorption. Another major component of the classes are centered on the actions and qualities of spices in Ayurvedic cooking,” shares Dr Dhanya.

While the sessions will also include informative classes on obesity management, you don’t need to be a nutritionist to enrol in this initiative. Anyone with the zeal to change their eating and cooking habits will definitely take something home from this workshop.

At The Health Village, Aluva. `49,000 onwards (inclusive of yoga sessions, stay and meals).
