Akhilesh Bagaria and Vaibhav Bhandari, founders of Faacto,  the gene-based health and fitness application, busts five popular myths on the occasion of World Health Day.

White Rice Makes You Fat

The type of rice we consume is completely irrelevant when it comes to weight loss. The reaction of the body to a food item comes down to a wide range of factors including the Clock Gene, a gene that determines at what time of the day the body is capable of being at its best and worst. A morning person will digest carbs faster in the morning but gain weight at night for the same quantity, and vice versa for a night person.

Intense Cardio Is the Key to Weight loss

Regular cardio surely helps in burning calories, but the extent of weight loss is determined by the genetic makeup of an individual. While some bodies are designed to excel with endurance, some are meant for strength training. There are specific genes such as ACTN3 that are responsible for the force and power generated by the body. Therefore intense cardio is the key to weight loss only for bodies compatible with endurance training.

Strength Training Makes Women Bulky

It’s true that strength training helps in bulking up significantly, but that’s the case only for men. A woman possesses 1/20th to 1/30th of a man’s testosterone level and cannot bulk up in the same manner at the same pace. Now, it’s a completely different case if a woman consumes about 10,000 calories in a day and indulges in some intense strength training.

You Can Lose Fat in a Specific Area

One can spend hours doing the same exercise over and over again to lose weight in a specific area, but the truth is that they don’t get to decide that. It is the body that decides where they lose the fat first. Prioritising the whole body over one specific body part is surely the right and the only way to move forward.

Stay Hungry to Lose Weight

Staying hungry only deprives the body of energy and productivity and in no manner contributes towards losing weight. With weight loss, it comes down to the way the body processes proteins, carbs and fat. If the PCF consumption compliments the body based on its genetic makeup, the body will naturally maintain its healthy self and burn unnecessary fat immediately.
