Music composer Anu Malik talks about old friend, remembers Zubeen Garg who passed away tragically

The tragic death of Indian singer Zubeen Garg has sent shockwaves throughout the music community. Friends, colleagues and well-wishers across the fraternity have been pouring their tributes and sharing personal anecdotes.

Recently, music composer, Anu Malik, who has worked with Zubeen Garg on several hit songs, shared that Zubeen had previously confided in him about some serious health concerns.

In the light of Zubeen Garg's tragic demise at just 52, Anu Malik said that Zubeen Garg had told him about some health issues, such as sudden blackouts, he had been facing. “He used to tell me he has blackouts suddenly", shared Anu Malik.

Anu Malik added, "I told him ‘go and get yourself checked’". The composer confessed that they lost track after that and expressed his sadness of losing a dear friend.

According to reports available so far, Zubeen Garg suffered a fatal seizure while scuba diving in Singapore on September 19, 2025. Despite attempts to revive him, he was declared dead soon after being rescued from the water.

Anu Malik also opened up about the kind and gentle soul that Zubeen Garg was. He said, "He was such a gentle, loving soul...I had met him first through a person from Assam. I made him sing in Fiza, and we got along like a house on fire. He was very emotional about his sister who he had lost in an accident. He used to sing in Assamese Bengali, Manipuri, Boro, even Marathi, he had told me! Malyali songs as well. His live-in concerts were deadly".

Anu recollected Zubeen Garg's love for Assam and the hills. The composer recalled an incident where Zubeen had expressed his unwillingness to move to Mumbai.

"I would keep telling him to be in Mumbai, he would get more work, but he never wanted to leave his place...He used to go and help people affected in the floods, he was running a charity. I was very close to him, he would keep telling me about the work undertaken", Anu Malik shared.

Anu Malik and Zubeen Garg collaborated on films like Mission Istanbul (2008), Main Prem ki Deewani Hoon (2003) and others.
