Ed Oliver grieves the loss of his 2-year-old son as Buffalo Bills stand by him

In a statement released on Saturday, general manager Brandon Beane spoke on behalf of the franchise, "On behalf of the entire Buffalo Bills organization, we want to publicly express our condolences to Ed Oliver and his family on the devastating loss of his son. It's an unthinkable tragedy for any parent. We will continue to support Ed and his family as we all grieve this tragic loss."

Oliver's young boy reportedly passed away on June 28 after being discovered unconscious in a swimming pool at a home outside of Houston. The boy was taken by ambulance to a nearby hospital, where he was later pronounced dead, after Harris County Sheriff's Office deputies responded to an ongoing emergency call.

Neither Oliver's family nor local authorities have publicly identified additional details of the incident, and the Sheriff's Office has not commented further on the status of any investigation.

Sources close to Oliver say he and his family have requested privacy and prayers during this difficult time. Despite the personal tragedy, Oliver reportedly continued participating in the Bills' training camp in the weeks that followed, though he was held out of Buffalo's recent preseason matchup against the Cleveland Browns — a decision the team attributed to a minor injury and a broader plan to rest veteran starters.

Oliver, 28, was Buffalo's first-round pick out of Houston in the 2019 NFL Draft and has spent his entire eight-year career with the organisation. He's coming off a strong start to last season before injuries — including a bicep procedure and a related knee issue — sidelined him for a stretch of the year.

The outpouring of support from the Bills organisation, teammates, and supporters has served as a reminder of the close-knit community that surrounds the team—one that goes well beyond the football field—while Oliver and his family grieve in private.
