Newton out of the race for 2018 Academy Awards

Rajkummar Rao-starrer and India's foreign language Oscars entry Newton is officially out of the race for the 2018 Academy Awards

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences released the nine films from the foreign language category that will be moving on in the 2018 Oscars race. Rajkummar Rao-starrer Newton, Inda's entry for the 2018 Oscars, did not make the cut. 

The film, directed by Amit Masurkar, tells the story of a government on election duty in the jungles of Central India, dodging guerrilla attacks in his attempt to protect the free voting system.

The announcement that was posted on the official Oscars website on Thursday listed the following films as those that will be moving on in the foreign language category:

Chile, A Fantastic Woman, Sebastián Lelio, director;

Germany, In the Fade, Fatih Akin, director;

Hungary, On Body and Soul, Ildikó Enyedi, director;

Israel, Foxtrot, Samuel Maoz, director;

Lebanon, The Insult, Ziad Doueiri, director;

Russia, Loveless, Andrey Zvyagintsev, director;

Senegal, Félicité, Alain Gomis, director;

South Africa, The Wound, John Trengove, director;

Sweden, The Square, Ruben Östlund, director.

The official picks for the 90th Academy Awards ceremony will be announced on January 23rd before the event that is set to take place on March 4th.
