Pokémon is coming back on the silver screen through Pokémon: Wild Card, an upcoming movie for 2027. The movie was announced during the closing ceremony of the 2026 Pokémon World Championships, which was held in San Francisco. The company released a brief trailer along with the announcement, which gives a sneak peek into a TCG player and Mimikyu.
The teaser begins with a cryptic Trading Card Game player who is dressed in a yellow hoodie similar to Mimikyu. The Ghost/Fairy type Pokémon made its first appearance in the seventh generation of video games, which includes Pokémon Sun and Moon. Mimikyu is famous for disguising itself as Pikachu, the mascot of the entire franchise.
As for Pokémon: Wild Card, the director’s seat will be occupied by Katsuhiko Kitada. Kitada is known to have produced several big names in the anime industry, such as The First Slam Dunk, Attack on Titan, and Naruto: Shippuden. The character design will be done by Akemi Hayashi. Some of her previous works include Banana Fish and Lazarus. The film will be produced by Japanese animation production company CloverWorks. This company is also responsible for some anime series such as Spy × Family and Bocchi the Rock.
Pokémon: Wild Card is set to become the next Pokémon movie after 2020's Pokémon the Movie: Secrets of the Jungle. The latter got a theatrical run in Japan before its world premiere on Netflix in 2021. The last Pokémon movie to be shown in theatres around the world is Pokémon the Movie: The Power of Us from 2018. This movie was only seen in theatres outside Japan through Fathom Events.
The company has planned more Pokémon releases in 2027. Winds and Waves are expected to debut in 2027. The release happens at a time when Pokémon is celebrating 30 years of its creation in 2026.
