This new cafe and bistro in Salt Lake Kolkata is all about presenting classics with subtle flavour twists

Subhadrika Sen

As the receding raindrops fell lightly on the window, we sat inside the newly opened Missora Café and Bistro in the by-lanes of Salt Lake, sipping the pastel-hued Appletini and admiring the works of Van Gogh and Henri Matisse on the walls. Owned by Michael James and Sidharth Pradhan, this upcoming cosy nook won us over with its homely ambiance, aesthetic décor, Instagram-worthy photo corners, and a team of hospitable staff.

We recently visited Missora and here's what we recommend

Glazed carrot and feta whip

Ours was a tangy green apple start with the Appletini followed by a Prawn cocktail. Cold, refreshing, and juicy prawns in a blend of sauces and herbs made for the perfect appetiser for seafood lovers. It was followed by Glazed carrot and feta whip, where feta, Greek yoghurt, balsamic vinegar, herb oil, and chilli oil made a bed of dip for the long-sliced carrots glazed with star anise, butter, and honey. This dish is suitable for a hearty share with friends over a cup of coffee. Up next, the Cajun chicken with sliced bell peppers and onions was flavourful and wholesome.

Aglio-e-olio

What struck us about the menu were subtle changes in the flavour profiles or notable dishes that introduced slight variation, giving the dish a whole new direction. For the mains, we were greeted with the Aglio-e-olio. Rather than having a liquidy gravy, the pasta water, chilli oil, and garlic emulsion stuck to the pasta strands like a sauce, making sure that we didn’t have to work extra hard to get the flavours every time.

Dijon Chicken

Moreover, the Dijon chicken with veggies and roasted potatoes was the star of our experience. Fresh, juicy chicken thigh with a thick, mustard-loaded dijon sauce was pure pleasure in every bite. The seasoned and roasted veggies added the much needed crunch and peppery break from the mustard tinge.

Carrot Cake with cream cheese icing

We wrapped up with an equally good dessert; Carrot cake with cream cheese icing, which was mildly sweet and equally fulfilling at the same time. We paired it with their Hot Irish cof fee, a blend of Arabica and Robusta that lent it a distinctive aroma and balanced the bitterness.

Meal for two (approx.): Rs 1,000+.
