Past Perfect strings together Indian classical art spanning across a thousand years

Artworks from the 9th to 19th centuries will be displayed in the upcoming exhibition Past Perfect

This art exhibition in Gurugram opens doors to halls showcasing India’s diverse art and culture spanning across a thousand years. Titled, Past Perfect: a thousand years of Indian Art is an assemblage of 70 artifacts of classical Indian art ranging from sculptures to paintings under one roof. Curated by Todywalla Auctions, Heirloom Art and Itihasology, the exhibition will be on display from August 13 to Septemver 7 at The Quorum, Gurgaon.

The exhibition curates over 100 years of culture, dynasties, hyperlocal folk art and much more into 70 artifacts that are unforgettable in their looks and approach. From sculptures to paintings, each piece in the hall has a story that precedes your birth line.
On display are folios from illustrated Shahnamas, Jain manuscript paintings, depictions of Radha and Krishna, and illustrations from Franco-Indian albums. These are presented alongside sculptures–including images of Durga, Surya and other deities–as well as Pala works, bronze icons, carved wood, silver, textiles and decorative objects.
During the exhibition, there will a talk presented on one of India’s most talked about artifact, the Koh-i-noor. The talk in its course will focus on provenance, ownership, restitution, cultural property and the evolving ethics of museum collections.
The main objective of the art exhibition is to not only introduce the newer generation to their heritage and culture but also string together storytelling, conversations and interactive experiences to expand the pedagogy of art education.
Eric Chopra, Founder, Itihāsology mentions, “There are paintings from the celebrated Mughal, Pahari and Deccani ateliers, folios from the Shahnama and Gulistan, sculptures of Surya in his distinctive boots and divinities with ruby-red eyes, and lyrical artworks of divine couples. Through themed soirées, dining experiences, conversations and walkthroughs, we hope to create new ways of engaging with the world of Indian art while never compromising on nuance or scholarship.”
