From shimmering marble domes to mud-brick towers rising out of the Sahel, mosque architecture is one of the richest visual traditions on Earth. Across centuries and continents, master builders have used light, geometry, colour, and material to create spaces meant to humble and uplift. Here are ten mosques whose design still stops people in their tracks — wherever in the world they happen to be.

Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, UAE - Eighty-two gleaming domes, over a thousand columns, and the world's largest hand-knotted carpet make this one the most photographed mosques on the planet.
Sheikh Lotfollah Mosque, Iran - Widely considered a pinnacle of Safavid design, it has a single dome wrapped in cream and turquoise tilework so intricate it seems to shift colour with the sun
