Bengaluru is doing things differently, in a first-of-its-kind initiative, the city is looking for its first 'Bicycle Mayor' and all cyclists can apply for the role. Part of an ongoing global project, Dutch organisation BYCS has decided to do things differently in India.

The 'Bicycle Mayor' will be responsible to promote cycling as a cheaper and cleaner alternative to beat pollution and reduce the use of motorised transport in the city. The organisation involved in the initiative is hoping to achieve 50 per cent bicycle usage in various cities in India.

The applications are open to all people in Bengaluru who are keen cycling enthusiasts and will be shortlisted by a six-member panel. The winner will hold the post for two years.

Interestingly, there are bicycle mayors in seven countries in the world and only Bhopal in India appointed its first in 2016. The applicants are invited until April 23.
