Here are 6 tips to boost your typing speed

Are you someone who uses a keyboard frequently, then these tips might be useful fo you

Want to type faster and more accurately? Simply spending hours at the keyboard isn't enough. To truly improve your typing speed, accuracy, and endurance, you need to train the muscles that do the work. Practicing targeted hand exercises, finger stretches, and dexterity drills helps build finger strength, improves flexibility and independent finger control, reduces hand fatigue, and prevents typing-related pain — so you can type faster for longer.

Master the keys

Train your fingers

Fast typing starts with finger fitness, not just more hours of typing. Daily drills like thumb presses against each fingertip, lifting each finger individually off a flat table, stretching your fingers wide and then closing into a fist, using a rubber band for resistance extensions, and squeezing a stress ball build strength, flexibility, independent control, and stamina. Just five minutes a day reduces fatigue and makes your fingers quicker on the keys.

Master the home row

The foundation of touch typing is anchoring your fingers on the home keys, A S D F for the left hand and J K L ; for the right when not actively typing. Additionally, make sure to use the bumps on F and J to orient yourself without looking. When you stop looking at the keyboard and let muscle memory take over, you can eliminate pauses and save the time lost between thinking and typing.

Focus on accuracy

Pro typists consistently say mistakes hurt your WPM (words per minute) more than typing slowly does. Instead of rushing, practice typing longer passages at a comfortable speed with 95 per cent accuracy or higher, slowing down deliberately on complex words and avoiding constant backspacing. This builds consistency, stamina, and automatic recall for common patterns like 'ing', 'the', and 'tion'.

Start with accuracy and not speed

Practice adaptive typing

Make use of the free online platforms or similar typing tutors for effective practice as they start with basic finger placement. You may then use algorithms to create personalised lessons based on your weak letters. They track your words-per-minute and error rate in real time, helping you identify problem areas and build proper technique.

Gamify your learning

To avoid boredom, mix your drills with typing games and timed online tests. Games that involve racing the clock or competing online make you think and react faster, while short typing tests give you instant feedback on your WPM and accuracy, allowing you to track progress and set achievable daily goals.

Stretch your wrists

Stiff wrists and sore knuckles will slow you down no matter how good your technique is. Make it a habit to stretch during breaks by extending your arm and gently pulling your fingers back, opening and closing your hands, rotating your wrists, and lifting your arms up to wiggle your fingers when they feel sore. This prevents carpal strain and keeps you comfortable during long typing sessions.
