Capcom moves Onimusha: Way Of The Sword release date ahead of GTA 6 rush

Capcom has shifted Onimusha: Way Of The Sword's launch to early September, steering clear of a crowded release window.

With Grand Theft Auto 6 set to launch on November 19, many publishers are adjusting their release schedules to avoid competing with one of the year's biggest games. Among them is Capcom, which has moved up the release of Onimusha: Way of the Sword.

Originally scheduled to launch on September 25, the action title will now arrive on September 4. The revised release date applies across all platforms, including PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch 2.

Capcom brings forward Onimusha: Way Of The Sword launch to dodge packed September

Capcom had only announced the September 25 launch window a month ago for the first brand-new mainline Onimusha game since 2006's Onimusha: Dawn of Dreams. The franchise made a return to modern platforms last year with the remaster of Onimusha 2: Samurai's Destiny

The earlier launch also gives the game more room in a packed release calendar. With its new release date, the next major title after Onimusha is currently Marvel's Wolverine, slated for September 15.

Players eager to jump in before launch can already try Onimusha: Way of the Sword through a newly released demo. However, Capcom has confirmed that progress made in the demo will not carry over to the full game.

"We've already said we're releasing it," Akihito Kadowaki said during Summer Game Fest in early June, before the industry's crowded release schedule became fully apparent as several major titles announced launch dates within weeks of one another. "We can't back out now!"

Since then, many developers and publishers have been looking to avoid going head-to-head with Grand Theft Auto 6, which, despite not arriving until late November, is widely expected to dominate the gaming landscape upon release.
