Kolkata-based occasion wear brand, Synonym, has recently launched its spring summer collection Letting Go, which uses fabric from the previous collection to create fusion wear, which is elegant and understated.
The label Synonym is just eight month old, but has a few innovative tricks up its sleeves, especially with the use of lightweight fabrics like tussar, muga silk, organza and chanderi.
“A lot of my inspiration comes from emotions and being a Cancer, I tend to feel a lot of things, which I express through the designs. This spring summer collection is all about letting go of the past and making way for the bright future,” says Shilpi Agrawal, the young designer.

“We collected scrap fabrics left from our last collection- called ‘Finding Your Lost Self,’ and used them as textures, fringes, and lines or cage-like patterns, which indicates a breaking away from the memories of the past,” she adds, revealing that she also used rich cotton sourced from the weavers of West Bengal in this collection.
The label’s focus remains sustainability and they design outfits, keeping in mind, the minimum wastage possible. We noticed a Chanderi pintuck sari, with embroidery, and fringes at the edges teamed up with a pleated peplum blouse which has angel sleeves. The sari had a vintage appeal, although a lot of new patterns merged in one look. We realised each of the pieces could be styled differently to create a different new look altogether and that remains the plus point of all the garments Shilpi creates.
A pleated dress in Tussar, with an organza overlay, held together with an embroidered belt was the classic fusion of indo-western, suitable for semi-formal evening wear. The colours, rose dust, haint blue, sage grey, and mocha brown, also complement the Indian skin tone and looks apt for both day and night time occasions.
“Today, it’s more about breaking the fashion rules, rather than following a fad. I am finding more and more millennials ready to experiment and invest in apparel which is out of the box yet environment-friendly,” shares Shilpi. “For me personally, comfort comes first, and that reflects in my collection too,” she adds with a smile.
We noticed an organza paneled dress in off-white, with a pinstripe shrug, has a semi-casual look which you can carry throughout the day and transform it into party wear in the evening. There are other pieces too, such as a crop top and a wrap pant, paired with an organza jacket; and flared pants in lavender pink, teamed up with a fringe crop blouse in blue, and a matching hand-embroidered pintuck dupatta.
Each of the detailing and embellishment of this collection are in sync with what Shilpi believes, will be back in trend very soon- “Polka dots, wide legged belted pants, wrap dresses- all are coming back into fashion, and so is neon,” adds the couturier, who admires the wearable art created by Rimzim Dadu and would want to dress up Sonam Kapoor in her clothes some day.
