JUST AS WE were entering The Green House the sight of a Siberian Husky and a Golden Retriever prancing inside a glass room had us smiling. Reconfirming it to be the venue of our interest and not a pet shop, we entered via a black wooden gate that opened up to a café with a designated room for our furry friends.

The 1200 sq ft cafe that opened around four months ago, is more than just a coffee place, we were informed at the outset. While the pet section (200 sq ft) scores high and is a welcome change offering you the chance to play with the canine friends, the 24-seater main area, adjacent to the pet room, encourages people to pick up a book or two or play a board game. Believe us when we say you can spend hours with these options around, apart from good food. The Green House has been designed after a similar café in Amsterdam, informs Anirban Deb Roy, the owner of the café who started this Southern Avenue branch months ago. Their flagship outlet is at Salt Lake. It also has a mezzanine floor accommodating around 24 more seats.

Moving over to food, the menu is a fulfilling one, unlike other coffee joints in the city. Offering continental, Chinese and a little bit of Indian, the menu has elaborate options of interesting mocktails, mojitos, coffees, crushes and ice tea. In fact, we started our tryst with this café-with-a-difference with a refreshing Aam Salam Iced Tea. The harmony between green mango and ice tea served in a long glass was sweet with a subtle taste of the king of fruits hitting the right spots. Playing with our taste buds next was the flavourful Thai Saute Chicken served with peanut butter sauce. As we went through the menu that offers soups, salads, pizza, pasta, noodles and more, Grilled Bhetki with Mustard Sauce made a sizzling entry. The juicy and succulent fish covered in piquant sauce served with veggies, mashed potatoes and herb rice make for a delectable fulfilling meal. The dessert chocobomb is a sinful treat and the romanticism between the chocolava cake, made with perfection, and ice cream can be the reason for you to make several trips to this café.
