German luxury carmaker BMW has expanded its footprint in India with the official launch of the new X1 Long Wheelbase (LWB) at an introductory price of Rs 49.90 lakh. Locally produced at BMW Group Plant Chennai, the stretched compact luxury SUV undercuts its standard petrol sibling by Rs 1 lakh while providing limousine-like rear proportions tailored specifically for chauffeured comfort.
Highlighting the strategic importance of the launch, Hardeep Singh Brar, President and CEO of BMW Group India, emphasised the evolving requirements of premium buyers.
Measuring 4,616 mm in length with a wheelbase extended by 108 mm to 2,800 mm, the X1 LWB treats rear passengers to 150 mm of additional legroom, extended cushioning and backrests that recline up to 28.5 degrees. The upscale cabin is equipped with a segment-largest nine-square-foot panoramic sunroof, a widescreen curved display, ambient lighting and a 12-speaker Harman Kardon sound system. Power comes from a 1.5-litre TwinPower Turbo petrol engine paired with a seven-speed Steptronic dual-clutch transmission, delivering 156 hp and a fuel economy of 15.5 km/l.
Alongside the SUV launch, BMW opened order books for the first-ever BMW i5 Long Wheelbase, representing the marque’s first locally produced electric executive saloon in India.
Measuring 5,175 mm long with an expansive 3,105 mm wheelbase, the zero-emission tourer boasts an 81.6 kWh battery pack offering a driving range of up to 669 km on a single charge. Its electric motor generates 268 hp, accelerating from zero to 100 km/h in 6.7 seconds, complemented by adaptive rear-axle air suspension for exceptional long-distance ride refinement.
