American rapper Kendrick Lamar on Monday created history by being the first non-classical, non-jazz artist to win a Pulitzer Prize. The rapper has won it for his 2017 album 'DAMN' which took the world by storm and seems to be on everybody's playlist. 

Interestingly, the prize describes Lamar's years growing up in his hometown Compton while also giving people a glimpse of the African-American life. The album has become more popular than his previous album from 2015 called 'To Pimp A Butterfly'. The album also went platinum earlier this month and even won the award for the Best Rap Album at the 60th Grammy Awards. 

The Music category for the Pulitzer Prize was first established in 1943 after the Prize itself was founded in 1917. The prize winners were exclusively classical artists until 1997.

Kendrick Lamar has also released one album every year since 2015's 'To Pimp A Butterfly', 'Untitled Unmastered' in 2016 and DAMN in 2017.
