Crunchy allies for your microbiome: How daily nuts transform gut health

Daily handfuls of almonds, walnuts and pistachios feed beneficial gut bacteria, boosting digestion, immunity and even mood through fibre, polyphenols and healthy fats

Nuts, with their texture and flavour, are not only a great option to satiate our hunger pangs but also beneficial for gut health.

How do nuts improve gut health?

Think nuts are just a snack? Think again.

They are full of gut microbiota, that essential microbial ecosystem in our intestines that regulates the immune system, digestion, and even mood. Consuming a handful of nuts daily can transform the gut bacterial composition, promoting beneficial bacteria thanks to their richness in polyphenols, prebiotic fibre, and healthy fats. Before we dive into the healthy benefits of eating nuts, let's look at what microbiota really is.

What is gut microbiota, and why does it matter?

The trillions of microorganisms, primarily bacteria, that inhabit the digestive tract are known as gut microbiota. They are crucial for human health, as they produce short-chain fatty acids by fermenting indigestible fibres. They in turn reduce inflammation, strengthen the mucosal barrier and nourish intestinal cells. To keep inflammatory bowel diseases under check and prevent cognitive impairment, maintaining a balanced gut microbiota through diet is essential.

How nuts nourish the microbiota

Nuts contain soluble and insoluble fibre, polyphenols, and non-digestible bioactive compounds that reach the colon intact, where they serve as a substrate for microbial fermentation. Each type of nut has its own benefits. According to almond skin studies, almond skin is full of polyphenol, which acts as a potent prebiotic, increasing the abundance of beneficial bacteria after six weeks of consumption.

For a heavy dose of fibre and omega-3 fatty acids, walnuts are the best option. To prevent constipation, pistachios and hazelnuts are best; they add insoluble fibre to regulate digestion and prebiotics that feed good bacteria. Peanuts and cashews contribute proteins and minerals that support mucosal integrity.

Nuts are high in prebiotic fibre and short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), which help maintain a healthy gut barrier. Owing to their microbial diversity, regular nut consumption supports a balanced digestive ecosystem.

Specific benefits by nut

Almonds: Providing roughly 3.5 to 4 grams of fibre per ounce, their brown skins are rich in polyphenols that nourish Bifidobacteria and assist in smooth digestion.

Walnuts: Packed with unique plant-based omega-3 fatty acids and antioxidants, they help modulate gut bacteria and support a healthy inflammatory balance in the digestive tract.

Pistachios: Provide high levels of the carotenoids lutein and zeaxanthin, which protect your eyes from blue light damage and age-related macular degeneration
