Even before Mumbai and Delhi begin their day, the first light shines on Dong Valley, located in Arunachal Pradesh. This small village is famous all over for witnessing India's first sunlight. It lies in the Anjaw district and is located in the proximity of the Lohit River.
Dong is situated on the left bank of the Lohit River, near Walong and Kibithu. It became famous for the place where the earliest sunrise occurs in India in 1999. This place became popular among travellers who wanted to witness the sunrise on New Year's Day in 2000.
It spans more than 30 degrees of longitude. This means that sunlight hits this eastern region way before the western cities. During the height of summer, India's first sunrise in Dong may be as early as 4 am.
The easiest way to get to Dong is from Walong. The route by road transport normally follows the route Tinsukia, Tezu, Hayuliang, and Walong till Dong. The nearest airport to reach Dong is Dibrugarh Airport, and the nearest railhead is New Tinsukia Junction.
From Walong, the tourists make an early morning trek to the sunrise point. In the passage, the distance is indicated to be about 8 to 10 kilometres, with the ascent starting at around 3 am.
The trek will lead trekkers to the top of the steep, pine-covered hill during nighttime. The activity concludes with views of the mountains and the sunrise. Sunrise timings vary through the seasons. Thus, it would be best to find out beforehand.
Witnessing India's first sunrise is only a part of the experience. The village of Walong has beautiful mountain scenery, whereas Kibithu forms one of the most eastern settlements of India. The Lohit river flows through the valley, and hilly terrain with pine cover dominates the scene. This region is also associated with the Meyor tribe, and their customs play a significant role in the region.
The most distinct period to see India's first sunrise is the arrival of the monsoon, which occurs towards the end of June. The sky may appear very colourful before the rainy season. Yet, timings might differ based on different circumstances.
Dong is located in a sensitive border area. Travellers should obtain information in advance on Inner Line Permit requirements, the local laws and security warnings before starting their trip to the place.
