When you talk of Goa, it’s mostly the vibrant beaches, water sports and party culture that comes to mind. The beautiful churches, weekend markets, luxury resorts and forts are also being widely included next in the travel itinerary. This time around the Goa tourism Department gives you one more reason to visit the beautiful state in the near future and that is the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj digital museum. The museum is currently under construction in Farmagudi, Ponda and is expected to be a major attraction once it opens. While no opening date is confirmed, time and again hints have been dropped as to what one can expect from the museum.
Even though the museum is still under development certain aspects of what one might expect from the museum is already out in the public domain. As the name suggests, it will be ‘digital’ heavy museum rather than one which is full of tangible objects. One can expect 3D/ 4D and 5D technological experiences, augmented reality, virtual reality, holograms, projection mapping, interactive storytelling, and more that represents the contemporary visual narrative over traditional ones. This will help to connect the museum and its objective with modern audience, especially from the younger lot. The galleries would not just talk about Chhatrapati Shivaji but also give a wider historical background of Goa starting from the Stone Age, Satavahana period, Kadamba rule, Portuguese colonialism, Goa’s liberation movement and Goa as seen today.
Apart from the digital galleries, the entire space is being developed for a one-day sightseeing / excursion site and is expected to include a war costume gallery, boat gallery, light and sound show, replica of Saptakoteshwar Stambh, visitor facilities, disability access features, horse trails, café and souvenir shops.

Chhatrapati Shivaji's history with the Konkan coast is well known. The historical icon’s leadership, legacy and command extended far beyond the territories of Maharashtra. His political and military campaign reached Portuguese-occupied Goa and thus the state also has a history with this iconic leader. This museum, thus not only aims to connect the new generation with the icon but also explore how his influence extended over Goa as well.
