As with all things Donald Glover aka Childish Gambino, this Hollywood film is shrouded in mystery. There’s no official full-length trailer, no press releases, no interviews—the only thing that’s available is some shoddy video footage of Guava Island’s teaser which surfaced from back when it was showcased at 2018’s Pharos festival in New Zealand.

Directed by Donald’s “Atlanta” collaborator Hiro Murai—the Japanese-American filmmaker behind the award-winning music video This Is America—Guava Island is touted to be a tropical thriller. It revolves around Donald who portrays a struggling musician based in Cuba, where the film was ‘secretly shot’. The leaked trailer hints at social themes as it opens with Donald’s character strumming a guitar and lamenting, “We live in paradise, but none of us has the time or the means to actually live here. We work hard, we deserve a day off.”

Donald’s character hopes to get-rich-quick by attempting a major robbery, chaos ensues. Not much has been revealed about Rihana’s role, however, going by the footage available it’s apparent that the Barbadian singer, behind hits like Work and Diamonds, plays Donald’s love interest. The film also stars Letitia Wright (Black Panther) and Nonso Anozie (Game of Thrones).

Despite the hype, the film will premiere on Youtube as part of the Coachella live stream. The video streaming service has revealed that Guava Island, the new Childish Gambino film featuring Rihanna, will hit the screens on April 13—the night after Childish Gambino headlines the fest.
